Did you happen to catch a peek of the huge full moon last
night? If you were one of the lucky ones…you would have witnessed a blue moon.
Now wait…it wasn’t blue in color! Why call it a blue moon? Well, there are a
couple of explanations. The term blue
moon is usually used nowadays to describe a second full moon in a single
solar calendar month (this will happen every two to three years). The usage of
the term "blue moon" to describe the second full moon in one calendar
month results from a misinterpretation of the traditional definition of that
term in the March 1946 issue of Sky & Telescope Magazine. Before then, the
term was used to describe the third full moon in a season with four.
Interesting!
