Ringling Museum

John Ringling was one of the five original circus kings of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He was an entrepreneurial genius and through his success with the circus and other investments, became quite wealthy. In 1911, John (1866-1936) and his wife, Mable (1875-1929) purchased 20 acres of waterfront property in Sarasota, Florida.   In 1912 the couple began spending winters in Sarasota and later decided to build a home there. Ringling gradually acquired a significant art collection, including paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, Velàzquez, Poussin, van Dyck and other Baroque masters, as well as rare antiquities from Cyprus.  He built a palace for his treasures in a 21-gallery Museum of Art on his Sarasota property. John Ringling bequeathed his art collection, mansion and estate to the people of the State of Florida at the time of his death in 1936. A short one hour drive from Tampa, you’ll find a day exploring the Art Museum and the Ringling Mansion a truly fascinating day.

Henry B Plant Museum

Henry B. Plant Museum announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 1,500 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This is a great way to spend the day enjoying this wonderful museum.

Tampa Bay Comic Con

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend Comic Con which started yesterday and runs through Sunday at the Tampa Convention Center. Stars you might see at this popular event are Lauren Cohan, Chad Coleman, Maisie Williams, Rory McCann, Jason Momoa, and Willow Shields from The Hunger Games. The doors open today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Tampa Convention Center is located at 333 S Franklin Street. Tickets are $20 for a one-day admission, 12 and under is free. Autographs from celebrities cost extra.

What is a Blue Moon?

Did you happen to catch a peek of the huge full moon last night? If you were one of the lucky ones…you would have witnessed a blue moon. Now wait…it wasn’t blue in color! Why call it a blue moon? Well, there are a couple of explanations. The term blue moon is usually used nowadays to describe a second full moon in a single solar calendar month (this will happen every two to three years). The usage of the term "blue moon" to describe the second full moon in one calendar month results from a misinterpretation of the traditional definition of that term in the March 1946 issue of Sky & Telescope Magazine. Before then, the term was used to describe the third full moon in a season with four. Interesting!

Back to School

Well, for thousands of children in the Bay Area…summer vacation has come to an end. Today is the first day of school for students in Polk, Manatee, Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas and Hernando counties. Let’s all be reminded to slow down as we’ll see more kids at the bus stops, walking, and on bicycles.  Have a great school year kids!

Manatee Viewing Center

  Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach delivered reliable electricity to the community for 16 years before the commercial operation of Big Bend Unit 4 in 1986. That year, people started seeing manatees in large numbers in the power station's discharge canal, where saltwater – taken from Tampa Bay to cool Unit 4 – flowed, clean and warm, back to the bay. When Tampa Bay reached 68 degrees or colder, the mammals would seek out this new refuge. The Manatee Viewing Center was soon born. Today, Big Bend's discharge canal is a state and federally designated manatee sanctuary that provides critical protection from the cold for these unique, gentle animals. This is a great place to observe and photograph manatees.
