Google Street View Hitting Florida Beaches

As part of an 825 mile project to take photos of Florida beaches, Google Street View trekkers are hitting the beaches this week at Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Island, Anclote Key and Honeymoon Island. Two photographers are hiking the beaches carrying 40 pound backpacks with 15 camera lenses that take photos every 2.5 seconds. The result will be millions of photos all woven together to create the ability to virtually walk the beach from your computer while never leaving home. Pretty cool!

Super Boat National Championship and Festival

Catch three days of powerboat racing starting today at Coachman Park in downtown Clearwater. With the roar of the engines and blazing speeds up to 180 miles per hour, there’s plenty of excitement for everyone. The race course start and finish line is by the Sandpearl Resort. You can take a tour of the boats before the races and meet the crews for autographs. Spectator admission is free or you can pay anywhere from $5-$20 for better viewing at Pier 60.

Victory Is Sweet

Today, the America's Cup race in San Francisco were fast, furious and exciting. If you are a Team USA fan, you'll be happy to know The Cup is staying right here in the United States. Oracle Team USA sailed their way to sweet victory and won the 34th America’s Cup over Team New Zealand. Oracle won the last 8 races in a row to clinch the race series and solidify one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history. With futurist designs and new lightweight materials, the 72ft catamarans hit speeds over 50 mph.  Complete with fixed wings for sails, carbon fiber materials, hydrofoils to lift the hulls above the water...the boats seem like vessels from the future. Who knows how fast they'll be sailing in the next few years.  Congratulations to the Oracle Team USA sailors for never giving up and bringing home the win!

Catch The Harvest Moon

Long before electric lights, farmers needed to extend their workdays by gathering their crops by moonlight. It was the only way they could find the extra window necessary to harvest everything in time for the market. The full moon closest to the autumnal equinox became known as the “Harvest Moon”. You can check out the spectacular Harvest Moon tonight as it rises just after sunset. In the northern hemisphere, the autumnal equinox lands on September 22 this year. So…just a few days left of summer!

Weeden Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center

Located on Tampa Bay, Weedon Island Preserve is a vast 3,190-acre natural area. It is comprised mostly of marine ecosystems with some uplands. Thousands of years ago, indigenous peoples occupied the area. Today, the preserve protects this wide diversity of natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. Weedon Island Preserve is also a well-known birding and fishing site. Admission is free and the park is open daily from 7:00 a.m. until 15 minutes before sunset.
