Hurricane Sandy delays flights

If you’ve been watching the news the last few days, the big news right now is Hurricane Sandy heading towards the East Coast. From Maine to the Carolinas, federal and state officials urged residents and businesses to prepare for the worst — drenching rain, flooding, high winds, highs seas, snow and widespread power outages. Federal officials said the impact would extend into the Ohio Valley.
Even though Sandy was still at least two days away, residents along the northeastern Atlantic Coast, mindful of possible transit shutdowns and bombarded by storm warnings, kicked into preparation mode.
The storm may cause major disruptions for travelers going to and from the East Coast over the next several days. Airlines said they were closely monitoring the storm, and they urged travelers to regularly check the status of their flights.
Several major airlines waived fees for passengers wanting to change their reservations, subject to some restrictions. Delta Air Lines said travelers could change flights at no cost for travel to 15 states and Washington, D.C. United Airlines made a similar offer to reschedule flights for no fee for travel in and out of nearly 30 airports along the East Coast.
The storm is expected to merge with a cold front from Canada — creating a dangerous system that could reach 800 miles in diameter, affecting a third of the United States.

Why are Fall and Winter sunsets so brilliant ?

Well, to answer this question we have to understand the colors we see in a rainbow. Blue light has short wavelengths and it gets scattered the easiest by the air molecules. Longer wavelength lights such as reds and orange are not scattered as much. When the sun rises and sets, light from the sun has to pass through much more of the atmosphere before we see it with our eyes. So, the light comes in contact with even more molecules in the air. The blue light scatters away and this makes the orange and reds appear more vivid.
Another factor that helps is the weather patterns. During this time of year, dry and clean Canadian air sweeps across the country. So, more colors are able to make it through without getting scattered away. That explains why it’s not uncommon this time of year to see some incredible sunsets and sunrises with colors of orange, yellow, red and even pink.
Be sure you take time out to catch one of those amazing skies sometime soon…you’ll be glad you did!

Skydiver breaks sound barrier

Sunday was a day to remember for daredevil skydiver Felix Baumgartner. More than 5 years of research and preparation would finally pay off for this very brave man. Felix landed quite gracefully after jumping from his capsule from a height of 24 miles.  Not only was this a record breaking height, but the preliminary results show that he hit a world record speed of Mach 1.24 or 833 mph. Breaking the sound barrier with the human body alone has never been accomplished. Baumgartner’s jump lasted about nine minutes and about half of that time was spent falling. With no reference point for how fast he was falling, Felix said it was hard to articulate the feeling he experienced while falling at this record shattering speed.

So, after accomplishing this amazing and very dangerous feat, what could possibly be next for “Fearless Felix “? He plans to settle down and fly helicopters on mountains rescue and firefighting missions in Austria and the U. S.
