If you
love history and how it affects our life today, then today is a big day for
you.
On this
day in 1773 The Sons of Liberty dumped 342 chests of British tea into the
Boston Harbor. Dressed as Mohawk Indians
they boarded the boats at midnight. This
was to protest the Tea Act of 1773 a bill enacted by the British parliament to
save the faltering British East India Company by greatly lowering its tea tax
and granting it a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade.
In 1950
in the wake of the massive Chinese intervention in the Korean War, President
Harry S Truman declared a state of emergency.
He stated that “Communist imperialism threatened the world’s
people. And called upon the American
people to help construct an “arsenal of freedom.”
In 1960,
in the only event of its kind in U.S. history two planes collided over New York
City. A United DC-8 from Chicago was
heading for Idlewild Airport(now JFK International). At the same time a
TWA Super Constellation from Dayton was
heading to LaGuardia . The United flight
was put into a holding pattern due to bad weather. The pilot miscalculated the pattern and flew
into the path of the TWA flight. The
crash killed all crew and passengers on both planes as well as 6 people on the
ground.
For those
who love literature, on this day in 1775 Jane Austen was born. In 1944 the Battle of the Bulge began. Why that title? Because the Germans created a “bulge” around
the area of the Ardennes forest in pushing through the American defensive
line. This was a desperate attempt to
push the Allied front line west from n northern France to northwestern Belgium.
For our
younger readers…….In 1977 John Travolta
was launched into super-stardom when he starred in Saturday Night Fever.
