Post Office test same day delivery

Due to rapid growth in e-commerce shipping, the U.S. Postal Service is moving this holiday season to start a premium service for the Internet shopper seeking the instant gratification of same-day package delivery.

Teaming up with several major retailers, the Post Office will begin expanding service in San Francisco on Dec. 12. If everything goes well, the program will quickly expand next year to other big cities such as Boston, Chicago and New York. It follows similar programs by eBay, Amazon.com, and Wal-Mart Stores, which charges a $10 flat rate for same-day delivery.

Who knows, one day the service could be expanded to our city. No need to find a parking spot or wait in long lines at the register. We’ll be able to shop from the comfort of our own homes and later that day the doorbell will ring….. sure enough…special delivery!

Cheesecake made easy

With Thanksgiving coming up this week I thought it would be a great time to share one of my favorite recipes. I love cheesecake and this recipe is easy to make. You can add your own fruit toppings or leave it plain with a little whip cream on top. Have fun and enjoy the holiday!

Cheesecake

Crust;  preheat oven to 400
 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
¼ cup sugar
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
½ cup butter or margarine
1 slightly beaten egg yolk
¼ teaspoon vanilla
To make crust:  Combine 1st 3 ingredients. Cut in butter till mixture is crumbly.  Add egg yolk and vanilla.  Blend thoroughly. Pat 1/3 of dough on bottom of 9 inch spring-form pan (sides removed) Bake in hot oven (400) about 8 minutes or till golden; cool.  Attach side to bottom, butter and pat remaining dough on sides to height of 1 ¾ inches.
Filling:
5, 8oz pkgs of cream cheese
¼ teaspoon vanilla
¾ teaspoon grated lemon peel
1 ¾ cups sugar
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
4-5 eggs, 1 cup
2 egg yolks
¼ cup whipping cream
To make filling:  Let cream cheese stand at room temperature to soften (1-1 ½ hours.) Beat creamy. Add vanilla and lemon peel.  Mix next 3 ingredients, gradually blend into cheese.  Add eggs and egg yolks one at a time, beating after each just to blend.  Gently stir in whipping cream.  ( I use my KitchenAid mixer with the paddle to get the filling really smooth and nice.)
Turn filling into crust lined pan.  Bake at 450 for 12 minutes; reduce heat to 300 and continue baking 55 minutes.  Remove from oven and cool.  Loosen sides with spatula after ½ hour.  Remove sides at end of 1 hour.  Allow to cool or refrigerate if you like your cheesecake cold. Add fruit toppings, chocolate or other toppings you like.  Keep refrigerated.

Rare Solar Eclipse

A total eclipse of the sun isn’t just an exciting and unforgettable experience. It’s also a rare opportunity for scientists to learn more about the sun and our universe.

There are special things that can be scientifically studied on the sun that can’t be observed at any other time. Researchers will use the few minutes of totality to learn more about the motion and structure of the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona.

The eclipse begins at 3:35 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Nov. 13. For an incredible chance to view this amazing event you might check out the Slooh Space Camera which will be broadcasting a live feed starting at 2:30 pm EST.

West Coast sending help to restore power

Disaster relief is heading to the East Coast with support from the U.S. Air Force. Thursday morning, airmen and women at March Air Reserve Base began loading the first of 14 military transport planes with Southern California Edison trucks.

Southern California Edison is sending 70 utility vehicles to the region in an effort to restore power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Originally, Edison had planned to send its trucks via a ground convoy. With the help of the Air Force the much needed relief will arrive in a matter of hours.

By Friday morning, Edison crews should begin to spread out over several states to help restore power to millions of families that are still in the dark. It’s great to see our nation coming together to help those in need!
